Sustainable Agriculture

        Sustainable agriculture can be understood as an ecosystem approach to agriculture. It can be defined in many ways, but ultimately it seeks to sustain farmers, resources and communities by promoting farming practices and methods that are profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities. Sustainable agriculture fits into and complements modern agriculture. It rewards the true values of producers and their products. It draws and learns from organic farming. It works on farms, harnessing new technologies and renewing the best practices of the past.

In short Sustainable Agriculture is:
Economically Viable: If it is not profitable, it is not sustainable.
Socially Supportive: The quality of life of farmers, farm families and farm communities is important.
Ecologically Sound: We must preserve the resource base that sustains us all.

Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Each year we become even more sustainable by recycling & reusing our natural resources on the farm.

COMPASSION AND CARE

We treat our cows like members of the family, and that means giving them a whole lot of love and attention. At SVS Farms animal care is holistic, preventative and natural. We do our best to minimize health issues by giving our cows a clean environment, organic diet and lots of grazing time.
If a cow does get sick and need treatment, our farmers take the time to use natural and alternative methods instead of antibiotics.
Good things take time. We believe that cows should produce milk according to their natural cycles, so we never treat ours with growth hormones, and while sustainable farming practices take a great deal of time and effort, we know that they protect and enhance our natural resources—that’s good news for our animals, our communities and the planet.
As cattle farmers, it’s also essential that we take the necessary steps to protect the health of our animals. Maintaining good health is important to ensure acceptable standards of animal welfare, but such measures will also maximise the productivity of our herd.
At our farm, we look after our animals by monitoring them regularly in every aspects. This is one of the best ways of preventing disease and controlling its spread if there is an outbreak.
The day-to-day requirements for moving and handling cattle are of prime importance in minimising mobility problems in our herd. Effective building and yard layouts, track construction, and also the manner that cows are moved from housing to milking areas, or to-and-fro when at grazing, will minimise any risk of injury occurring.
This includes avoiding any 'dead ends' when planning livestock areas where crowding or bullying can occur, minimising steps and ramps, and designing gateways and doorways to be wide enough for the herd to pass through easily.
